How to Cash a Cheque Without a Bank Account in Canada

Cashing a cheque can be as simple as bringing it to a bank and giving it to the teller, but in some situations, people prefer not to do it through a banking institution. Fortunately, people who are unbanked do have options to cash a cheque without a bank account in Canada.

For more than 20 years, Speedy Cash has been like a helpful friend who lends you money when you need it. We make it easy for people to borrow money quickly. We do this by cashing cheques, giving payday loans (a type of short-term loan), and lending money online. Our main job is to help our customers get the money they need, making their lives easier and stress-free.

How Do You Cash Your Cheque?

Cheque cashing with Speedy Cash is easy:

Step 1. Visit our store.

Just visit any Speedy Cash store to cash your cheque. We have 20 conveniently placed locations across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia, so there’s probably one near you.

Step 2. Bring your cheque and two pieces of valid ID.

Simply bring the cheque you want to cash and present two pieces of valid, government-issued ID. One piece must be a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport. This is so we know the cheque is really yours!

Step 3. Get your money.

Once you’ve completed the first two steps, you’ll get your cash and be able to use it immediately.

What Kind of Cheques Can You Cash?

  • Paycheques

Bring in your paycheques from work, and we will exchange them for cash.

  • Insurance Cheques

If something unfortunate happens, like a car accident or a house fire, insurance companies will often give you an insurance cheque.

  • Government Cheques

Cash your government-issued cheques, from pensions to financial assistance. Speedy Cash charges a fee to cash government-issued cheques.

  • Tax Return Cheques

When you’ve paid more taxes throughout the year than what you actually owe according to your annual income tax return, you will receive a refund cheque from the government.

*Take note that if you want to cash anything issued by the Government of Canada, you must provide two forms of valid identification. One of these IDs should include both your picture and signature. A primary ID could be your driver’s licence, provincial photo card, or passport.

Other forms of identification can include:

Birth certificate issued anywhere in Canada, Social Insurance Number, Old Age Security Card, Certificate of Indian Status, provincial or territorial health services card, Certificate of Canadian Citizenship or Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card or Immigration and Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) form.

Please don’t sign the cheque until you’re at the store. We advise you to cash it within seven days, as cheques older than 30 days can’t be cashed.

What Are the Fees?

Speedy Cash is proud to offer low fees for our cheque-cashing services. At just $3.50 plus 3.5% of the cheque value, we are an affordable way for you to get your money fast. Rules might vary across provinces, so call your local Speedy Cash beforehand to confirm any associated cheque-cashing fees.
